The internet has opened up a whole new world for holidaymakers yet amazingly there are still areas of Western Europe where Brits fear to tread. Portugal's Eastern Algarve (turn right at Faro airport rather than left) is an unspoilt part of this fabulous coastline and like it's close neighbour features some of the best, though much less crowded, beaches in Europe.
Accommodation, also readily available on the web, is plentiful and varied but this year we really struck the jackpot with Mike and Tina Le Clercq's Villa 2020 at the Castro Marim Golfe Resort. Somehow the owners have managed to combine luxury with a capital L with a true homely feeling in this superb three-bedroomed (and bathroomed) villa. Beautifully equipped, spotlessly clean and maintained, the delights of your own plunge pool and magnificent views over the golf course are a real bonus after a 'tough' day on the beach or visiting delightful places such as Tavira, Villa Real Santo Antonio or the historic Castro Marim with its ancient fort and castle dominating the town. Another highlight was a leisurely drive in the Foz De Odeleite alongside the Guardiana river just half-an-hour away from the villa. Amazingly we hardly saw another soul whilst admiring stunning scenery in a totally unspoilt part of this lovely area.
Set alongside a nature reserve, the golf course has a fine clubhouse with friendly staff and very reasonable prices so there is no reason to wander too far for a decent meal. Would we go back? What time's the next flight!!

We stayed at the villa for 2 weeks summer 2010. The villa is outstanding, and furnished to a high standard. Everything about the place has a feel of quality. The club house is a short walk and serves good food at reasonable prices out on the terrace. A car is required to get out and about to neighbouring towns, where you will find many restaurants and shops etc. We wanted a quiet family holiday in nice surroundings and that’s what we had. This area of the Algarve seems unspoilt by tourism yet you can still reach the family attractions such as Aqualan d etc within an hour’s drive I would not hesitate in recommending this villa.

We had a fantastic stay at this villa. The standard of accommodation was of the highest quality with all of the mod cons you would ever need.
The property was very clean and serviced regularly throughout our stay, e.g. rubbish collection, etc. There was also clear advice with regards to local supermarkets, eateries, beaches, and so on. You could not want for anything else!!
We particularly liked the fact that the villa (although only a short drive from Faro) is located in a region of Portugal where there aren't that many Brits about, in fact it seemed to be where the Portugese go on holiday. In addition, it was nice being so close to the Spanish border (a few minutes drive) and the town of Ayamonte,
which is excellent for restaurants.
The nearby beaches were also great, very clean and well suited to young families due to the shallow waters.
I would (and in fact have already) recommended this villa to friends. Thanks again Mike & Tina!!

This villa is everything we were told it would be. We have stayed at many 5 star hotels and villas on our travels, and this villa will rank amongst the best. It is actually bigger than it looks on the photos. I think it was the most relaxing holiday we have ever had. the views over the golf course are superb.
I would recommend it to anyone. Everything about it was wonderful.
Exceptionally clean, and well maintained, wonderfully quiet, yet within 5 - 10 minutes drive of beautiful towns both in Portugal and Spain.
Good choice of food at the clubhouse and service great too.
We will return.

The description of this Villa was absolutely accurate.
The property is exceptional. Very clean and extremely well appointed. The location on the golf course is superb with fantastic views. We loved eating and sitting out on the terr
ace - very private and not overlooked..
Our favourite beach was Praia Verde which has an excellent Beach Restaurant ( 20 Mins away) . Lots of good restaurants within a short car journey from the villa. ( car essential ) .
Good customer service with local representative on hand if needed. I would not hesitate to recommend this Villa to any of my friends.
We thought maybe the villa would not live up to our expectation, but it certainly did and more. The pictures do not really do it justice as the villa is bigger than we thought.
The villa is the very end one, so has fabulous views not only over the golf fairways, but over to the bridge that links Portugal with Spain.
Our family enjoyed the peaceful location, and the golf at Castro Marim itself was superb. (Being able to hire the owners golf buggy was a real benefit too.)
The villa was spotlessly clean and ready for our arrival, and our contact with the owners efficient and prompt.
Our only regret that we only had one week, but we shall hopefully visit again next year.
We particularly liked this part of the Algarve, having stayed in the more touristy Vilamora area last year, and the nearest town of Vila Real was busy with locals going about their business. (Great indoor fish and veg. market here every day, and town square full of restaurants).
The beach was wide, sandy and stretched for miles, and we loved the beach cafe at Cabeco.
We also found the clubhouse itself very good for snacks and evening food as a very reasonable price, and just a stroll from the villa.
We would
recommend this villa, and this part of the Algarve.
Had a brilliant time staying in the villa. The area was beautiful, the beaches were amazing not to mention the weather, throughout our stay I could of counted the number of clouds we saw on one hand, a mild contrast to the UK!. The villa itself far exceeeded expectaions, and catered for all our needs. The pool was a real benefit to have and all the rooms were really good, all with the own en-suites. It was great being able to sit outside admiring the stunning views and having barbeques using local produce that we had purchased from the permanent indoor market in Villa Real de Santantonio. There were several supermarkets which were very easy to get to including in VRS and Ayamonte (Spain) which is only 5km away . The villa itself offered privacy and comfort along with the feeling of exclusivity. The country cl ub offered a very warm and welcoming atmosphere, the staff being very friendly along with the customers. The food up their was one, if not the best food we had outside of the villa and a very reasonable rates. We had many recommendations for places to eat most of which in Monte Gordo, it's a shame we didn't have the time to try them all. The restaurants we ate at were also very good and none of us were disappointed. Monte Gordo is an amazing town offering a wide array of shops. I could not believe how busy it got, though really started getting busy after 9pm and the atmosphere was really positive. There was a also a ferris wheel which seemed to run all night, it never seemed to be empty. The times we visited Monte Gordo we went by taxi which was very reasonable, the staff at the club house being more that happy to organise the booking for you. On arriving at the villa there was an extremely comprehensive information pack which gave details of how to reach the supermarkets, beeches etc along with other important contact numbers such as doctors etc. It also gave details of some of the local restaurants. We were also provided with plenty of information before travelling and found it very easy finding the villa from Faro Airport. Overall we had a brilliant time and will definately be booking again, hopefully next time for longer and maybe we'll take up golf before the next visit as the course looked amazing. Thank you for a great holiday.
"Well then, where to start! This villa was everything said and more. It really was a peaceful location with exceptional views. My girlfriend and I were here for a week but really wish we could have made it at least two. The villa has been furnished stunningly; the pool is perfect and the location idyllic. The villa itself is extremely well laid out, clean and brilliantly well maintained. The amenities are superb with plasma TV, quality furni ture, air con, washing machine, bbq to name just a few. All bedrooms are of a great size and brilliantly presented.
If you want to stay at home and chill out on the super sofas whilst making some dinner in the excellently equipped kitchen, this villa is ideal. We tended to use the bbq if we were staying in - it was great and you can cook absolutely anything on it.
Alternatively, you can stroll down to the clubhouse and grab a bite and something to drink there. The food is sensational and extremely good value, you could eat there every night, with brilliant views looking onward over the golf course and beyond.
Even if you are looking to go out and about, Castro Marim & Monte Gordo is only a 5/15 min drive away and doesn't cost a penny. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops to get stuck in with. The restaurants tend to specialise in the freshest seafood, but also cater for everything else. If you're feeling like something different, there's Chinese and Indian restaurants too.
The beaches in this part of the world are beautiful and are only a 5 min drive away. I would recommend Praia Verde strongly. The beach is long, the water
lovely and there is a great seafood restaurant situated there. You can also grab snacks, drinks & ice creams from the shops.
Whether you are a couple, family, or golfers, this villa and its surroundings cater for it all. It's fantastic!"
